The future plan for City parks is here. Here’s how you can provide input

Following several years of planning, preparation and community input, the City of Sacramento has released its draft Parks Plan 2040 for public review and comment.

Led by the City's Department of Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment (YPCE), the Parks Plan 2040 will guide City efforts to manage and enhance parks, recreation facilities, programs, events, and youth services over the next 20 years.

"This effort has been underway since 2019, and we're thrilled to have reached this milestone to launch the draft plan," Park Planning and Development Services Manager Jason Wiesemann said. "Thousands of residents and care holders from the community provided input, which will guide project priorities moving forward."

The draft plan release aligns with the recent adoption of the City's 2040 General Plan.

While the 2040 General Plan identifies overarching goals for youth, parks, recreation, and open space within the context of other City goals and initiatives, the Parks Plan 2040 provides more detailed directions for YPCE's services to guide annual work planning.

Similar to the General Plan, the draft Park Plan 2040 reflects extensive public engagement, diverse community outreach and the involvement of advisory and stakeholder groups.

Some outreach activities were conducted virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic and included a multilingual online questionnaire, photo contest and youth drawing activity to define park and recreation needs.

The draft Parks Plan is available for 30-day public review and comment until April 8. Comments can be submitted online. In addition, printed copies of plan and paper comment forms will be available at each of YPCE's community centers and Sacramento Public Libraries.

Staff anticipate final approval of the Parks Plan 2040 by City Council in May.

Any questions about the draft Parks Plan can be submitted via email at [email protected].
