4/11/2024 Burklund/Axelton Fire Update

4:15 PM 4/11/2024 BURKLUND/AXELTON FIRE UPDATE

RCFD#1 crews have spent about five hours today putting out hot spots along the river channel to ensure the Burklund/Axelton Fire doesn't get out of control. Hand crews and trucks have been monitoring conditions and addressing any flare ups throughout the day. No homes are threatened at this time.

The fire is still at 90% containment and officials estimate about 8,200 acres have been burned in this fire.

Chip Redmond with Kansas Mesonet reports: "Periods of gusty winds with very dry conditions continue statewide. As fuels are becoming more volatile, wildfire concerns are increasing through the weekend and into next week."

We'll continue to monitor conditions closely. Residents in the area will likely continue to see smoke from downed trees and logs that are still burning. If you notice fire escaping the perimeter, or getting outside the blackened areas, please call 911 right away.

Thanks for everything you do to keep the community safe.
