FDA Committee Recommends Johnson & Johnson Booster Shots

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The City of Corpus Christi - Nueces County Public Health Department is ready to administer booster shots of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine if approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which could happen within several days.

Today, a key FDA committee voted unanimously to recommend approval of Johnson & Johnson booster shots, the first step towards full approval. Residents who have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine are urged to stay informed and consult their health care provider as guidance is issued.

This nonbinding decision by the FDA's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee recommended the booster for all adults who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. This differs from previous booster recommendations, which specified booster shots for recipients of the two-dose Pfizer/BionNTech and Moderna vaccines only for specific age groups. The committee also recommended booster eligibility for Johnson & Johnson begin at two months after the initial single dose was administered, compared to six months for Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna boosters.

Specific eligibility criteria will be issued upon full approval by the FDA and CDC. Once approved by the CDC, Johnson & Johnson booster shots could begin immediately for all eligible Americans.

When fully approved by the CDC and FDA, the City of Corpus Christi - Nueces County Public Health Department is prepared to administer the authorized booster shots to those eligible at all vaccination sites.
