Bunker One supplies B100 to NW Europe ferries

Bunker One has been supplying B100 biofuel for a month to two passenger ferries connecting Larvik and Kristiansand in Norway and Hirtshals, Denmark.

Norway-based ferry operator Color Line fueled its ferries SuperSpeed 1 and SuperSpeed 2 with B100 supplied by Bunker One. Bunker One, a subsidiary of Bunker Holding, sourced the fuel from Danish biofuels producer DAKA ecoMotion. Bunker One claims that the B100 reduced the ferries' CO2 emissions by about 85pc.

The EU's emission trading system for vessels took effect on 1 January. Under the ETS regulations, vessels travelling within, to and from EU territorial waters have to pay for 40pc of their CO2 emissions.

Separately, vessels travelling in the EU's emission control areas, which include these ferries' routes, have been required to burn marine gasoil (MGO) with 0.1pc sulphur limit since 2015. Vessels could also utilize a marine exhaust scrubber and burn high-sulphur residual fuel oil (HSFO). In Rotterdam, B100, comprised of advanced Fame 0°C cold filter plugging point (CFPP), was priced at 1,135/t, or 56pc premium to MGO's $726/t and at 165pc premium to HSFO's $428/t, average from 2-3 January, Argus data showed.
