The Jamk's BERT project team is delighted to announce the completion of Jamk's Breaking Education Barriers: Inclusion, Rehabilitation, and Technology (BERT) project's first face-to-face workshop, which was held in Finland from arch 25-27, 2024, at the campuses of Jamk University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä.

The BERT project's esteemed partners from Tampere University, the University of Rwanda, and The State University of Zanzibar played a pivotal role in this significant milestone of our collaborative journey. Their participation in the BERT project's first face-to-face workshop in Finland was instrumental in shaping our strategies and sharing expertise. We were honored to have Dr. Vesa Saarikoski, Rector of Jamk, Dr. Pertti Malkki, Director of the School of Health and Social Studies, and Mr. Kari-Pekka Murtonen, Chief Specialist at Jamk University of Applied Sciences, for delivering opening and welcoming speeches during the three days event.

Throughout the workshop, collaboration was at the forefront as we refined project implementation strategies and shared expertise among partners. A highlight of our time together was the insightful visit to Valteri, The Center for Learning and Consulting in Jyväskylä. Here, our partners delved into the realm of cutting-edge assistive technologies designed to facilitate independent learning within inclusive education settings, inspiring us all with the possibilities they offer for inclusive learning environments.

On the final day, we hosted an enlightening seminar that drew participants from diverse organizations. A special highlight was the invaluable presentation by Dr. Satish Mishra from ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology. Dr. Mishra shed light on the pivotal role of assistive technology in advancing inclusive education, igniting important conversations, and sparking new ideas among attendees. Throughout the seminar, we were privileged to hear insightful presentations covering various aspects of our mission, including digital accessibility, assistive technologies, disability inclusion, and inclusive pedagogy. Each presentation contributed to our collective understanding and commitment to breaking down barriers to education.

At "BERT's Breaking Education Barriers: Inclusion, Rehabilitation, and Technology," our mission is clear: to enhance the capacity of higher education institutions in East Africa to break down barriers that hinder the full inclusion of people with disabilities into society.

Together, we are dedicated to fostering a more inclusive education landscape where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive regardless of ability. With collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to change, we are confident that no one will be left behind on the path to inclusive education.

Join us as we push boundaries, challenge perceptions, and create a brighter, more inclusive future for all. Together, we can truly make a difference.
