Some ten weeks after the Bundestag elections, the new Federal Government is in now office. The members of the Federal Cabinet received their certificates of appointment from Federal President Steinmeier. "There is a sense of curiosity and hope as your government takes up its duties," said the Federal President after presenting the certificates of appointment. "I certainly speak for the vast majority of our compatriots when I wish you the best of luck and much success in your work - for the good of our country," said Steinmeier.

After being sworn in at Bellevue Palace, the Federal Ministers took their oath of office in the Bundestag. Acting on an official memorandum issued by the Federal President, Bundestag President Bas officially announced the formation of the Federal Government.

Bundestag elects Scholz as Federal Chancellor

Earlier on in the day, the Bundestag elected Olaf Scholz as the new Federal Chancellor. 395 members of the Bundestag voted in favour of Scholz, allowing him to secure the so-called "Chancellor's majority" of at least 369 votes. 707 out of a total of 736 members of the Bundestag cast their votes by secret ballot.

Following his election, the newly elected Federal Chancellor received his certificate of appointment at Bellevue Palace, the official residence of the Federal President.

Scholz takes oath of office

Olaf Scholz then returned to the Bundestag to take his oath of office. Bundestag President Bärbel Bas swore him in in accordance with Article 56 of the Basic Law.

The Federal Chancellor spoke the following oath: "I swear that I will devote my strength to the welfare of the German people, increase its benefit, avert harm from it, uphold and defend the Basic Law and the federal laws, fulfil my duties conscientiously and do justice for all."

After being elected and receiving his certificate of appointment, Federal Chancellor Scholz took his oath of office before the Bundestag.
