Grassley, Cotton and Republican Colleagues Call on Biden Admin to Protect Jewish Students from Antisemitism

WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today joined Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and 25 Republican senators in urging Attorney General Merrick Garland and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona to restore order to U.S. college campuses rocked by antisemitic riots. The senators are requesting an update by Wednesday, April 24, on efforts to enforce federal anti-discrimination laws on college campuses amid the violent demonstrations.

"The Department of Education and federal law enforcement must act immediately to restore order, prosecute the mobs who have perpetuated violence and threats against Jewish students, revoke the visas of all foreign nationals (such as exchange students) who have taken part in promoting terrorism, and hold accountable school administrators who have stood by instead of protecting their students," the senators wrote.

"President Biden issued a statement on Sunday purporting to condemn the outbreak of antisemitism," they continued. "If that statement was serious, it must be accompanied by immediate action from your departments."

Background:

Antisemitic incidents on college campuses have spiked following Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Last week, more than 100 students from Columbia University were arrested after setting up a tent encampment on the school's main lawn to protest Israel. Similar encampments have sprouted at other universities, including Yale and New York University, requiring police action to break up increasingly disorderly demonstrations and resulting in disruptions to class schedules.

Grassley's Ongoing Efforts to Fight Antisemitism:

Grassley has raised concerns regarding rising antisemitism on college campuses since Hamas' October attack. Earlier this month, he joined bipartisan senators in introducing the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which would strengthen the Education Department's enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in the face of antisemitism.
