TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Lane Closures on Congress Drive from Chef Menteur Highway to Stephen Girard Avenue

NEW ORLEANS - Beginning Thursday, May 23, weather permitting, City of New Orleans Department of Public Works' contractor Wallace C. Drennan, Inc. will begin roadway restoration that will temporarily close the northbound lane of Congress Drive between Chef Menteur Highway and Stephen Girard Avenue.

This closure is being held to accommodate construction on the Gentilly Woods Group F construction project. Changes to traffic patterns and lane closures will begin at 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 23 and will remain in effect for approximately one week, weather permitting. Public safety is top priority; signage and traffic control measures, such as barrels and fencing, will be onsite to direct drivers and pedestrians.

During this temporary lane closure, crews will be working in the closed lane of travel to perform removal of roadway and utility repairs. Northbound vehicle traffic will be temporarily detoured to Louisa Drive to continue to Congress Drive via Stephen Girard Avenue. Residents and businesses in this area were notified of the closure via a neighborhood canvass.

The $48.1 million Gentilly Woods Group F project was designed by EJES Inc. and is being constructed by Wallace C. Drennan, Inc. The scope of work varies by block but includes repairing sewage, water, and drainage line, as well as rebuilding the street entirely and repairing sidewalks and curbs. In general, the contractor is working from 7 a.m. until sunset, Monday through Friday. The entire project is scheduled to be complete by Summer 2024, weather permitting.

Since May 2018, DPW has completed 186 projects with an estimated value of $765 million. Today, 58 roadwork projects are under construction with an estimated value of nearly $794 million.
