Library Collections Highlight Black History During February

In-person and online events, staff-curated booklists, movies, and a Black history video playlists, plus a collection of online resources and exhibits honor the rich history of African Americans in the community as the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC) celebrates Black History Month.

Two featured events are "Meet Author Jon-Patric Nelson" and "Storyteller Tamara Green"

  • Meet Author Jon-Patric Nelson
    Tuesday, February 28, 2023, 6:30 pm (Online event)
    Celebrate Black History Month with author Jon-Patric Nelson who will join us virtually to discuss writing, read passages from his books, and answer audience questions. Registration is required.
  • Storyteller Tamara Green
    Saturday, Feb. 11, 2 - 2:45 p.m. at the Temple Terrace Library
    Hear wonderful folktales, African Stories Great and Small, told by Tamara Green in her captivating and interactive style. For children age 4 to 12 with a caregiver. No registration required

  • Black History in the Tampa Bay Area features photos from the Burgert Brothers Photographic Collection, which includes historic photos of Tampa Bay spanning from the late 1800s to the early 1960s.
  • Our Lives, Our Legacies: The Hillsborough Black Experience preserves stories of African American County residents.
  • The Black Newspaper Collection, archives spanning 1893 to 2005, are a window into daily life.
  • Black Life in America, shows life as recorded by news media.
  • African American Heritage is a mix of resources devoted to African American family history research.
  • Black Freedom Struggle, a curated selection of primary sources designed for learning about the struggles and triumphs of Black Americans.
  • Gale in Context: Biography, explore hundreds of featured Black Americans.
