Boulder invites community to Sumac Avenue Improvements open house

BOULDER, Colo. - The City of Boulder invites the community to learn about and provide feedback on the Sumac Avenue Improvementsproject's proposed concept designs to improve travel on Sumac Avenue between Broadway and 19th Street. Community members can participate in the project open houseon Wednesday, May 15 from 5-7 p.m. at Maker Space Room 310, Crest View Elementary School, 1897 Sumac Avenue.

Open house materials will also be available online on Be Heard Boulderthrough May. The open house will include information on project background, timing, funding, and proposed concept designs. The proposed designs include pavement reconstruction, sidewalk improvements, storm drainage improvements, curb and gutter improvements, traffic calming to slow vehicle speeds, and a crossing at the Broadway and Sumac Avenue intersection for people walking and biking on Sumac Avenue to access the Wonderland Lake Trailhead.

The open house marks the project's return following a pause during COVID-19, after the city completed community engagement and preliminary design. Following 2024 community engagement, the city will advance design, explore funding options, and finalize funding and implementation. The city will meet and work in partnership with individual property owners who may have land affected by the project to address funding determinations and ensure transparency throughout the process. The city will implement improvements with scheduled repaving in the summer of 2025.

The city is prioritizing work on this street due to its deteriorating pavement conditions and connection to nearby Crest View Elementary School. Improvements to this part of Sumac Avenue also support creating low-stress walkable and bikeable routes for all ages and abilities to key destinations in Boulder, a priority of the Transportation Master Planand Low-Stress Walk and Bike Network.
