This is APA Communications Director Gregg Overman with the APA Information Hotline for Thursday, March 8.
APA BOARD OF DIRECTORS CONVENES FOR SPECIAL MEETING: The APA Board of Directors convened at 1:30 p.m. CST today at union headquarters for a special meeting. We have posted the agenda here.
In his opening remarks, APA President CA Dan Carey recapped the meeting he had on Tuesday morning with Acting FAA Administrator Dan Elwell in Washington, D.C. Among the topics discussed: first officer qualifications, rumors of raising pilot retirement age to 67, and the cargo 'carve-out' under FAR 117. CA Carey stated he is 'fairly confident' that the Trump Administration has no interest in changing existing FO qualifications, and that there's no momentum in Congress or the FAA toward raising the mandatory retirement age for pilots. However, he also noted that there doesn't appear to be any movement toward eliminating the cargo 'carve-out' under FAR 117, which he characterized as a major issue for APA. 'We want a single sky where all pilots operate under one safety net,' he said. Mr. Elwell, a former American Airlines pilot, is among those under consideration for FAA Administrator.
CA Carey also recapped his visit to the Delta ALPA Master Executive Council meeting earlier this week and noted that the Delta MEC and the United MEC have agreed to partner with APA to produce a joint contract comparison, eliminating duplication of effort.
At the conclusion of his remarks, CA Carey turned over the podium to Negotiating Committee Chairman CA Bob Duma, who announced that he would be resigning his chairmanship effective immediately. The board then went into closed session for the rest of the afternoon before recessing its meeting shortly after 6 p.m. CST. The meeting will resume at 9 a.m. CST tomorrow.
In accordance with R2017-37 Rev. 1, a video of today's session will soon be posted to AlliedPilots.org/Videos.
That's it for now. Thank you for checking this hotline.
