President Trump arrest update

I always caution that when "blockbuster" stories hit, it's best to wait at least 72 hours to react, just to make sure they aren't a load of applesauce. Unfortunately, the claim that former President Trump would be arrested on Tuesday was too big a story to ignore, although I did try to throw in some caveats. By the time Monday rolled around, it had gone through a number of twists. Now, it's unclear whether Trump really will be arrested, and if so, it's not likely to be on Tuesday. Here's the latest as of early Monday morning, but I warn you, by the time you read this, it might have gone through 14 more revisions.

The New York City D.A. Alvin Bragg refused to confirm the arrest story, and it appears that Trump heard it from media reports based on illegal leaks from the grand jury. There was also a report that there's still another witness they have to hear from on Monday. Since they only meet for three hours a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (they must have Joe Biden's work schedule), it's unlikely they'd have to time to hear another witness, assess the case and vote to indict all before leaving on Monday (then again, this is a New York grand jury going after Trump, so it's not like they have to take any time to think about it.)

Even the report that there's another witness has also been disputed, and if there is another witness, it's officially secret, but of course, there's already a leaked report of who it is. According to the news site Insider, it's former Rudy Giuliani attorney Robert Costello. Trump called Costello a "highly-respected lawyer" who has "conclusive and irrefutable" proof that the charges are bogus (reportedly, that the payment to Stormy Daniels was to protect Melania Trump, not Donald's campaign, and if there's any justification other than protecting the campaign, the case falls apart.) Former Trump attorney and convicted felon/perjurer Michael Cohen also reportedly wants to testify in rebuttal (because he's telling the truth NOW), so that could drag this out even further.

Meanwhile, a number of legal experts, including some who are not particularly friendly to Trump, have slammed the possible arrest and prosecution plans as nakedly political and a stinker of a case that's "legally and factually dubious" and would not be brought against anyone other than Trump.

https://redstate.com/nick-arama/2023/03/19/andrew-mccarthy-lays-out-what-a-turkey-the-nakedly-political-case-is-against-trump-n718456

Bragg responded that "as with all of our investigations, we will continue to apply the law evenly and fairly, and speak publicly only when appropriate." I'll resume typing after you finish laughing.

Done? Okay, I'll give you another minute…

Anyway, that's where we are at this particular moment. Trump could still be indicted, as the Democrats have been trying to charge him with something/anything from the moment he came down that escalator to announce his presidential run in 2016. As Robert Spencer at PJ Media points out, ever since Democrats made huge gains in the wake of Watergate, they've seen accusing Republicans of criminality as an effective political tactic, and they use it habitually. In fact, if I have to hear Hillary Clinton piously intoning that "nobody is above the law" one more time, I might lose my lunch.

https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/robert-spencer/2023/03/19/hold-everything-now-trump-will-likely-not-be-arrested-at-least-on-tuesday-n1679641

Or who knows? Maybe the last-minute witness will convince them the case is groundless. Or possibly (and I know this is a longshot) they'll consider how outrageous, divisive and unprecedented this is; what a Pandora's Box it would open for prosecuting former Presidents, including their own; and how many legal experts are denouncing the charges as a giant pile of steaming bull leavings, and decide to behave like responsible adults instead of weaponizing the justice system to attack a political opponent. Stranger things have happened, I just can't remember when. All we can do is keep calm and wait and see.

In the meantime, here's an interesting sidelight: Did you know that there is one historical instance when a sitting President was arrested and fined? It's a very interesting story, and it proves that once upon a time, even the biggest big shots in Washington truly weren't above the law, and even they recognized it.

Can Trump win?

A new theory has arisen as to why the Democrats want to arrest Trump, other than toxic Trump Derangement Syndrome, and it's not that they want to prevent him getting the 2024 GOP nomination or lure his supporters into protesting so they can spark a riot and brand MAGA grannies as violent insurrectionists (although it's likely quite a few do dream of that.)

This latest theory is that they know an arrest for Trump will galvanize his base and assure they rally around him so that he WILL win the nomination, and then he'll be much easier for Biden to beat than someone like DeSantis, who is younger and has similar policies to Trump but without all the negative baggage and set-in-stone opposition.

I don't know, I think that's giving them credit for being better long-range thinkers than they are (see "defunding the police.") But it does bring up a question Republicans need to ask themselves: If Trump gets the nomination, can he win the 2024 general election? Remember, it's an electoral college victory that will come down to a handful of swing states that did not go our way (for whatever reason) in 2020.

Scott Morefield at Townhall.com has a thought-provoking column on this subject, arguing that like some of the candidates he backed in 2022, Trump can win the GOP primaries but not the general elections in swing states. He backs up his case with numbers and asks for comments from those who have a reasonable counter argument.

I'd urge you to read this with an open mind and consider this question carefully. The future of America - possibly even its survival - may be riding on it.

Life in a Blue City

Life In A Blue City, Part 1: A CNN crew was shooting a report about street crime in San Francisco, and even though they'd hired security to watch their cars, someone still smashed their car window and stole their property out of it in less than four seconds. I can't wait to see how CNN will give this a positive spin.

https://notthebee.com/article/cnn-hired-security-to-watch-their-cars-while-they-were-in-san-frans-city-hall-robbers-still-smashed-their-windows-and-stole-their-bags

Life in a Blue City, Part 2: San Francisco District Supervisor Hillary Ronen, who pushed "strongly" in 2020 for significantly "defunding the police and reducing the number of police officers," is now "begging" the city for more police officers in her district because crime is out of control.

https://hotair.com/david-strom/2023/03/17/shot-defund-the-police-chaser-i-am-begging-for-more-police-n537615

Gee, who could have predicted this? Bad news is that Ronen is also pushing for insanely lavish slavery reparations payouts, and if she gets that, San Francisco won't be able to afford police for a hundred years or so. Did I mention that this person actually holds a position of responsibility in city government? She must be the representative for the half of the population that has a below-average IQ.

Taibbi drops new Twitter File, "The Great COVID-19 Lie Machine"

On Friday, Matt Taibbi, one of several independent journalists tasked by Elon Musk with combing through internal communications at Twitter, dropped another file, this one dealing with censoring the truth about COVID-19 and vaccines. He calls it "The Great COVID-19 Lie Machine," and it will make you, no pun intended, sick. This might be the worst one of all, since it silenced information we should have had before making decisions about our own bodies and health.

These particular messages deal with a group called the Virality Project, which Taibbi describes as "a sweeping, cross-platform effort to monitor billions of social media posts by Stanford University, federal agencies, and a slew of (often state-funded) NGOs [non-government agencies]." It would flag posts as "potential violations" or disinformation "events" that mentioned such things as "reports of vaccinated individuals contracting COVID-19 anyway," "natural immunity," "leaked from a lab," even "worrisome jokes." (!!!)

"Stories of true vaccine side effects" were flagged by the Virology Project as "actionable content."

Taibbi reports that the Virality Project in 2021 "worked with government to launch a pan-industry monitoring plan for COVID-related content. At least six major internet platforms were 'onboarded' to the same JIRA ticketing system, daily sending millions of items for review." (Jira is a commercial software tool for project collaboration.)

And if there's a money quote in all this, it might be his Tweet #9: "Though the Virality Project reviewed content on a mass scale for Twitter, Google/YouTube, Facebook/Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, it knowingly targeted true material and legitimate political opinion, while actually being factually wrong itself."

Taibbi calls this "a secret, unified effort to control political messaging." He says that it "accelerated the evolution of digital censorship, moving it from judging truth/untruth to a new, scarier model, openly focused on political narrative at the expense of fact."

This is consistent with what we've been saying for a long time: that so-called "fact"-checkers identifying "disinformation" didn't care about what was true. They had an agenda that was dependent on a particular narrative, and so they had to suppress any truth at odds with that narrative while shoveling us a steaming load of hooey.

The Virality Project got rolling right after President Biden took office. The group at Stanford wrote to Twitter to discuss the project, and by February 17, Twitter had agreed to join in the fun and received its first weekly report on "anti-vax disinformation," which contained a number of items that were TRUE.

On February 22, VP had a Zoom call to welcome Twitter executives Yoel Roth and Brian Clarke. Taibbi includes a link to this in the file. And by March, VP had gained "visibility" to alternative platforms such as Gab, Parler, Telegram and Gettr, achieving "near-total surveillance of the social media landscape." By this time, Twitter personnel had adopted the language of VP, talking about "campaigns against vaccine passports," "fear of mandatory immunizations," and "misuse of official reporting tools" as "potential violations."

Through July 2020, Twitter's official internal policy on COVID required a story to be "demonstrably false" or contain an "assertion of fact" before they would act. But the Virality Project told them that the category of "Standard Vaccine Misinformation on Your Platform" should also include "TRUE STORIES that could fuel hesitancy [to get vaccinated]." (Emphasis ours.) These included stories such as "celebrity deaths after vaccine" and school closures due to post-vaccine illness. Regarding true stories of vaccine side effects, they told Twitter, "This content is not clearly mis or disinformation, but it may be malinformation (exaggerated or misleading). Also included in this bucket are often true posts that could fuel vaccine hesitancy, such as individual countries banning certain vaccines."

The Virality Project expressed concern to Twitter that the "vaccine passport narrative" had "driven a larger anti-vaccination narrative about the loss of rights and freedoms."

Now why would Americans be concerned about the loss of rights and freedoms? The Virality Project existed to get needles into their arms, even if that meant preventing their access to true information --- including from top virologists --- that might make them think twice.

VP even warned against people "just asking questions," because this was a tactic "commonly used by spreaders of misinformation." And it talked about "repeat offenders," such as Robert Kennedy, Jr., saying that they had a "large volume of material that is almost always reportable."

They praised themselves about being able to hone in on an "increasingly popular narrative about natural immunity." Yet in choosing to stifle this, they were, in Taibbi's words, "repeatedly, extravagantly wrong." Even as scientific consensus about natural immunity started changing, and research was showing that natural immunity provided at least as strong an immune response as vaccination, VP shunned this fact because "'natural immunity' is a key narrative...among anti-vaccine activists." Never mind that the anti-vaxxers happened to be CORRECT on this point.

This activity just went on and on, and the next year, on April 27, 2022, VP issued a report calling for "a rumor-control mechanism to address nationally trending narratives," and a "Misinformation and Disinformation Center of Excellence" to be conveniently housed within CISA, at the Department of Homeland Security. (Never mind how wildly unconstitutional this link to government is.) It was the next day that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced in a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing the creation of a "Disinformation Governance Board." (That was the "supercalifragilisticexpial-atrocious" board led by Nanny Poppins herself, Nina Jankowicz.)

Even in its very last report, Taibbi reports, VP said it was "misinformation" to suggest the vaccine does not prevent transmission or that governments were planning to introduce vaccine passports. Both of these assertions turned out to be TRUE. This project really had nothing to do with what is true, only with what they wanted you to think.

Recall that Stanford University was also involved in the 2020 Election Integrity Project (EIP). Remember them? They were to our elections what the Virality Project was to COVID.

https://fsi.stanford.edu/news/election-integrity-partnership-releases-final-report-mis-and-disinformation-2020-us-election

Starting at Taibbi's tweet #37, he uses information in the Twitter messages to link VP and EIP, and you also see how VP evolves as it works with more government agencies, including the Office of the Surgeon General and the CDC. This part is especially infuriating, because it shows their work becoming more enmeshed with our own government to conduct censorship by proxy. The "anti-disinformation" mission now is almost exclusively domestic in its focus.

Taibbi sums up his report this way: "America's information mission went from counterterrorism abroad, to stopping 'foreign interference' from reaching domestic audiences, to 80% domestic content, much of it true. The 'Disinformation Governance Board' is out; but truth-policing is not."
