GRAND BAHAMA, The Bahamas - The Department of Social Services has announced plans in observance of Disabilities Awareness Week which runs from December 1-7.
Brenamae Cooper, Chief Social Worker of the Department of Social Services Senior Citizens and Disability Affairs Division revealed that the week is set aside to bring awareness to those living with a disability in the community, under the theme, "Moving to a more inclusive community."
The week kicked off with a church service on Sunday, December 1 at Jubilee Cathedral.
The Department will host a Disabilities Expo on Tuesday, December 3, exhibiting the various non-government organizations on the island that work with and service persons living with disability.
Cooper noted that a number of those organizations that work closely with the Department of Social Services will showcase what it is that they do for their community at the St. George's High School Gymnasium from 9:30 to 2:00pm.
The Department also partners with the Anglican Women's Association to host a special luncheon for those living with a disability at the Foster B. Pestaina Centre at 12:00pm on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
