Mayor Boesen Continues Supporting Parks and Recreation, Joins the Mayors for Parks Coalition

Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa- Monday, February 19, 2024 - Mayor Boesen reaffirmed her dedication to enhancing the quality of life in Des Moines by pledging support to the Mayors for Parks Coalition, a coalition managed by City Parks Alliance. This national bipartisan coalition, founded in 2013, unites mayors from cities of all sizes across the country to advocate for increased federal funding specifically tailored to bolstering urban parks.

The focus of this coalition lies in advocating for increased funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund's Stateside and Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) programs. These initiatives provide matching grants aimed at fostering the creation and expansion of parks, the development of recreational facilities, and the advancement of local recreation plans.

"Des Moines thrives when our parks and green spaces flourish. They are not just areas for leisure; they are vital components of our community's health, well-being, and resilience," Mayor Boesen emphasized. "By investing in our parks and collaborating with fellow mayors through initiatives like the Mayors for Parks Coalition, we can ensure Des Moines continues to evolve as a livable, equitable, and sustainable city."

Catherine Nagel, Executive Director of City Parks Alliance, expressed her enthusiasm for Mayor Boesen's involvement, stating, "Mayor Boesen recognizes the pivotal role that parks play in enhancing the health and vibrancy of Des Moines, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Mayors for Parks Coalition."

Des Moines has benefited from the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) for many years and continues to do so. Recent projects such as the complete renovation of Chesterfield Park last year and upcoming improvement projects at Stone Park and SW 1st St. Bridge are just a few examples of how this federal funding positively impacts our community.

The Mayors for Parks Coalition achieved a significant victory in 2020 with the enactment of the Great American Outdoors Act, which secures $900 million in permanent and dedicated annual funding for the LWCF. Funded in part by revenues from offshore oil and gas drilling royalties, matched by state and local contributions, the LWCF has supported over 44,000 projects in 98% of the nation's counties, including numerous endeavors benefiting Des Moines residents.
