Mayoral Proclamation - Polio Eradication Day

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5.

WHEREAS, Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water, it can then attack the nervous system; and

WHEREAS, Along with our partners, we have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries, we have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and we won't stop until we end the disease for good; and

WHEREAS, Rotary members have contributed more than 2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary's advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort; and

WHEREAS, The Rotary Clubs of Moorhead, Fargo and West Fargo are holding the 14th annual Recital with a Cause Fundraiser to further the effort; and

WHEREAS, Recital with a Cause is a time for Rotary members, public health advocates, and all who want a world free from polio to come together, recognize our progress in the fight to end polio, and talk about the actions we need to take in order to end polio for good;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that We the Mayors of Fargo, West Fargo and Moorhead do hereby proclaim April 11, 2024:

POLIO ERADICATION DAY

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we have set our hands and caused the official Seals of the Cities of Fargo and West Fargo, State North Dakota and Moorhead, State of Minnesota to be affixed this 11th day of April 2024.
