High-level meeting between WATSAN DPG and Kenyan Water Ministry

Representatives of the Water and Sanitation Development Partners Group (WATSAN DPG) convened a meeting with Julius Korir, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, at the Maji House headquarters, on Wednesday, March 13, 2024.

The meeting was attended by Alexandros Makarigakis, Chair of the WATSAN DPG, who serves at UNESCO as the Director and Representative (a.i.), alongside Christian Berreta, Water Expert and Coordinator (a.i.) of the Division of Water Sciences at UNESCO.

Representing the World Bank, outgoing Chair Dominick De Waal, a Senior Economist, and his colleague Francis Ghesquiere, WASH Manager for East and Southern Africa, were present at the meeting.

The discussions primarily focused on significant issues such as Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), Climate Financing, and Water Resource Management (WRM). Key actions were agreed upon to drive forward the next steps, with identified modalities to gauge progress.

What is WATSAN DPG?

Water and Sanitation Development Partners Group (WATSAN DPG) comprises 26 members from bilateral and multilateral institutions, along with development banks investing in the Water and Sanitation Sector. Currently, the group is led by a rotational Troika consisting of the chair UNESCO, the outgoing chair World Bank Group, and the incoming chair USAID. They collaborate with national and county governments, private sector entities, civil society partners, and other stakeholders in the sector.
