Appointed to first-of-its-kind California High-Speed Rail program

Appointed to first-of-its-kind California High-Speed Rail program

02 December 2022

The program will connect cities across California with a first-of-its-kind electrified high-speed rail system in the USA, helping to generate mobility, environmental, social and economic benefits across the state.

Our US infrastructure team has been appointed, as part of the AECOM-led joint venture, to deliver program management support for the California High-Speed Rail Authority (Authority) on their transformative High-Speed Rail program. Our role within the joint venture is to provide project and program controls for the overall rail system.

The program is currently under active construction and advanced design in California along 171 miles between the cities of Merced and Bakersfield. To date the project has created more than 9,000 construction jobs.

Once fully completed, the 500 miles of track will connect San Francisco to Los Angeles, with commuters in cities across California benefitting from a frequent train service running at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour. The improved transportation network is expected to expand access to job opportunities, reduce traffic and air congestion, preserve agricultural and protected lands, and contribute to a cleaner environment.

The joint venture is expected to implement an operating model that facilitates the successful delivery of a full array of program delivery services in support of the Authority, such as program planning and strategy; environmental and engineering management; infrastructure delivery; supply chain management; and federal and state funding support.

James Fewtrell, Project Director, said:

"California High-Speed Rail Authority has a bold vision for state-wide mobility and we are looking forward to collaborating with our partners to ensure the program's delivery. By putting in a place robust controls, it will provide a clear baseline to transform performance and maintain a focus on the social, environmental and economic benefits that this complex program will generate."
