Preparation Key in Anticipation of Very Active Hurricane Season

With the beginning of hurricane season on the horizon, it's the perfect time to begin taking steps to prepare for a possible tropical storm. Preparation takes on added importance as various hurricane prediction centers are calling for a season with at least 20 named storms, with an estimate of 12 becoming hurricanes.

While there are no tropical storms currently, there are steps you can take now to ensure you are prepared should a hurricane or tropical storm hit our area. While Sumter County is an inland county, but there are still risks from high winds, flooding, tornadoes, and power outages.

"As we approach this hurricane season, it's imperative that we remain vigilant and prepared. With projections indicating heightened activity, it's not a matter of if, but when, a storm will strike," said David Casto, Sumter County Emergency Management Director. "Our readiness is not just about safeguarding property; it's about protecting lives and ensuring swift, coordinated responses that minimize the impact on our communities. Let's heed the warnings, fortify our defenses, and stand ready to weather any storm that comes our way."

Some important steps residents should take to prepare include:

Put together an emergency kit. This kit should consist of at least one gallon of water per person, nonperishable food, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, a first aid kit, toiletries, tools, and a cell phone with a charger. Check emergency equipment, such as flashlights, generators, and storm shutters.

Write or review your family emergency plan. Before an emergency happens, sit down with your family or close friends and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go, and what you will do in an emergency. Keep a copy of this plan in your emergency supplies kit or another safe place to access it in the event of a disaster.

Review your insurance policies. Review your insurance policies to ensure adequate coverage for your home and personal property.

If possible, have a generator at your home if the power goes out. Remember, generators should not be operated indoors to avoid hazardous and deadly carbon monoxide fumes. Fill your vehicles with gas well before the storm hits since gas availability might be reduced before or in the wake of a storm.

Casto also recommends residents take advantage of the Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday offered by the State of Florida from June 1 to June 14. He says it's a tax-free period that provides a valuable chance for families and businesses to stock up on essential items without the added burden of sales tax. "By taking advantage of this opportunity, we can ensure that our communities are better equipped to withstand the challenges that hurricanes may bring. Let's make the most of this tax-free period to bolster our preparedness and resilience against the unpredictable forces of nature."
