Night reading campaign across Ningbo

April 23 is the World Reading Day. On the evening, Ningbo Library coordinated with 29 locations including libraries in various districts (or counties), Dongqian Lake Library, and various commercial complexes in the city, to carry out the night reading activity, with nearly a thousand readers reading together on a family basis.

Unlike the previous years, when people read individually, this year's reading day has the theme of "reading the classics together with children". As a result, co-reading, accompanying children in reading, and guided reading have become a major feature of the reading activities this year.

In the new building of Ningbo Library, 25 young readers and their parents read together for an hour and a half, and shared their feelings afterwards on stage.

In this activity, most of the young readers are elementary school students around the age of 10, while most of the parents were born in the 1980s. Everyone was focused and immersed in reading, feeling the strength brought to them by words. A child who had twisted his foot participated in the activity despite the inconvenience.

"We have seen changes in reading when accompanying our children in reading this time. For example, as for the classic book of "Journey to the West", we read comic books and original novels when we were young, but now the children have access to the picture books and interpretation books. Each version has its own characteristics." said a Mr. Wang.

Then in the sharing session, 10 families shared their experiences and feelings of night reading together.

Ningbo Library invited Li Tianfei, the author of "Interpreting Journey to the West for Children" and "Reading Journey to the West for the Youth", to conduct a cloud reading lecture titled "Writing Techniques of Interpreting Journey to the West for Children" online, in order to meet the learning and viewing needs of readers who were unable to attend the night reading activity. As is shown, the live broadcast was watched by over 35,000 people.

More and more people are joining the team of "reading the classics together with the children", in the form of "parent-child reading" and "guided reading by famous scholars".

There were also a variety of activities at the other 29 venues on the evening.

The "2024 Ningbo Night Reading Ceremony" event was held at the Hankyu Plaza of Ningbo. Parisa, a 15-year-old girl from Russia, said she had a strong interest in Chinese culture and had been working hard to learn Chinese. Her favorite book was "Journey to the West".

"Parents and children sit together, sharing the joy of reading and sharing each other's feelings. This way of co-reading not only makes children feel the charm of reading, but also allows parents to recall the beautiful reading memories of their earlier years." said a person in charge fro Ningbo Library.
