First Reservists’ Week kicks off in Estonia

Sunday, Ministry of Defence of Estonia launched the Reservists' Week, taking place for the first time this year, with a display of Defence Forces´ equipment on Freedom Square in Tallinn, aiming to recognise and raise public awareness of the importance of reservists. As part of the Reservists' Week, the defenders of the country will enjoy discounts from over 200 companies ahead of the Spring Storm military exercise.

"Reservists are the main force of our national military defence, and their readiness to participate in the defence of Estonia is crucial for our common security," said Martin Reisner, Director of the Defence Willingness Department at the Ministry of Defence. "During the Reservists' Week, everyone has the opportunity to support our reservists by participating in various events, donating to the Reservists' Fund or by buying our digital camouflage products. Furthermore, companies can offer discounts to reservists," he added.

There are more than 90,000 trained reserve troops in Estonia, whose readiness to participate in the national defence depends on their personal motivation and the support of their families, employers and society as a whole. The Ministry of Defence in cooperation with the Defence Resources Agency is conducting the Reservists' Week from 28 April to 6 May with the aim of recognising and raising public awareness of the importance of reservists. However, all other defenders of our country also deserve recognition, and that is why more than 200 companies are offering discounts during the Reservists' Week, listed on kaitsevaeteenistus.ee, to all active service members, reservists who have completed their military service, conscripts and members of the Defence League assigned to military duties. In addition to wearing the uniform, to prove your status as a reservist and defender of our country, you can also show your military ID, your Defence League membership card, or the certificate of completion of conscript service. The exact terms and conditions of the discounts are set by the participating businesses.

"The fact that more than 200 diverse companies are offering such discounts demonstrates the high level of support from society for our national defence and defenders," Reisner added. "For example, during the week, Elron offers free travel on the basis of a conscript service certificate, while the City of Tallinn offers all national service members free entry to the city's museums, zoo and botanical gardens. This is a good opportunity for all reservists to spend quality time with their families before they leave for the Spring Storm exercise."

A Reservists' Fund has also recently been set up to help boost the fighting capacity and spirit of reservists. The donations received are used based on the input and needs of the Defence Forces and the Defence League. The fund is open to all citizens and companies. Cooperation agreements have been signed with a number of companies that donate a share of their proceeds to the fund.

Donations to the fund can be made tax-free:
