Largest Accrediting Body in Health Care Recognizes HSHS St. Vincent Hospital for Hip Fracture Care

Green Bay - The Joint Commission has awarded the first hospital in the state of Wisconsin, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, its Gold Seal of Approval® for Certification in Hip Fracture.

"This certification shows that HSHS St. Vincent Hospital is committed to providing the highest quality of hip fracture care" said Dr. Daniel Severance, Green Bay's only fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeon at the HSHS St. Vincent Hospital Fracture Center and Prevea Health.

HSHS St. Vincent Hospital is among a selected group across the nation to achieve Certification in Hip Fracture. As part of the certification process, Joint Commission surveyors visited HSHS St. Vincent Hospital in October 2017 and conducted a rigorous review of various aspects of the hospital's hip fracture care program, including:

  • Clinical outcomes and other performance measures used to identify ways to improve patient care.

  • Evidence-based guidelines incorporated into clinical areas on a daily basis.

  • The Osteoporosis Clinic, the first and only of its kind in Green Bay to provide osteoporosis treatment, prevention and education.

  • Education and instructions provided to patients and caregivers upon hospital discharge.

According to the CDC, 95 percent of all hip fractures are the result of a fall; and according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Wisconsin has one of the highest rates of death from unintentional falls in the nation. "The hip fracture program at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital works to fight those statistics by placing a strong emphasis on fall prevention," said Dr. Severance. "We commit ourselves to educating our patients and their caregivers about the steps they can take to prevent falls and ultimately, injury and death."

The Joint Commission, the nation's largest and oldest accrediting body in health care, accredits and certifies more than 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationally as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization's commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
