Congressman Kildee Announces New Federal Funding to Support Expecting Mothers in Mid-Michigan

FLINT-Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) today announced new federal funding to support expecting mothers and young children in Genesee County.

The $997,416 grant, awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy Start Initiative, will allow Genesee County Health Department to provide expecting mothers and those who have just given birth with health care services, food assistance, emergency supplies, transportation to care, housing navigation and other critical support to ensure their children grow up healthy and strong.

"Every mother and child deserve the care and support they need to live a healthy life," said Congressman Kildee. "I'm proud to have secured this federal funding to the health and well-being of mothers in our community. In Congress, I will continue to deliver federal resources home to support mid-Michigan families."

"The Genesee County Health Department has held this grant for over 20 years. The services that we provide with this funding are not only crucial to decreasing poor perinatal outcomes, but a fundamental step in increasing health equity in Genesee County. The Healthy Start Initiative is an extremely valuable asset for our community, we are ecstatic and honored to continue to be a recipient of this funding and thank Congressman Dan Kildee for his support," said Porsha Black, Genesee County Health Department Director of Community Health Promotion & Education.

Congressman Kildee has long-supported initiatives to improve outcomes for mid-Michigan families. In 2023, Congressman Kildee introduced H.R.3305, the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, to address the maternal mortality crisis in this country. Kildee has also delivered federal resources home to programs in mid-Michigan, like Head Start and Early Head Start, that support the healthy development of young children.
