PR No.188 Review of the Arbitration Legislation in Pakistan Islamabad : August 31,

Hon'ble Mr. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Judge Supreme Court of Pakistan, Chairman of the Arbitration Law Review Committee convened the Second meeting of the Committee today in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad. Mr. Muhammad Makhdoom Ali Khan, Senior Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan, Mr. Feisal Hussain Naqvi, Advocate, Supreme Court of Pakistan, Ms. Riffat Inam Butt, Secretary, Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Khashih-ur-Rehman, AS/EDGII, Board of Investment, Islamabad, Ms. Ambreen Abbasi, Senior Legislative Advisor, Ministry of Law and Justice, Islamabad participated in the meeting. Mr. Feisal Hussain Naqvi, presented the first draft of the proposed legislation, "Arbitration Act, 2023". He gave an overview of the proposed legislation and illuminated the Committee in detail about the rationale behind each new clause being proposed referring to the international experiences and best practices. Further, the Committee unanimously agreed to the proposal of adding experts in the Committee to augment the law reform process benefiting from their experience. Barrister Mian Sami Uddin, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan and Mr. Zafar Iqbal Khokhar, Research Officer, Research Centre Supreme Court of Pakistan, were co-opted as members of the committee. The committee appreciated the draft legislation presented and unanimously agreed to seek feedback from the members to initiate a consultative process to establish an efficient, expert and enforceable arbitration mechanism in Pakistan.
