Clubhouse headlines proposal to renovate Duane Banks Field

An updated proposal to renovate the home of the University of Iowa baseball team is on the docket for consideration and final approval by the Iowa Board of Regents.

The proposed renovation to Duane Banks Field includes a standalone clubhouse adjacent to the existing Hawkeye dugout. The 2,365-square-foot clubhouse would be constructed along the first base side of the stadium and extend down the right field line. The renovation is budgeted at $5.5 million and is expected to be completed in spring 2025. In addition to the clubhouse, new lights and turf will be installed this summer.

The project would be funded by athletic department gifts and revenue.

Constructing a new team clubhouse was identified as a priority after the university reconsidered an earlier proposal that included adding premium seating and renovating stadium amenities. The initial proposal was never presented to the Board of Regents for consideration. By moving forward with the new proposal, the project can advance immediately while fundraising continues for future renovations. A new press box and upgraded fan amenities are in the planning phase.

Duane Banks Field is located on Stadium Drive and sits between landmarks Kinnick Stadium and Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Moving the stadium to a new location was investigated and found to be much more expensive than renovations. The current location was also determined to be more desirable due to its proximity to other athletics facilities.

The proposed renovation marks the latest investment since the field's inception in 1974. In 2002, former Hawkeye and former major leaguer Cal Eldred donated $245,000 to fund the installation of lights. From 2014-15, the field surface was replaced by AstroTurf and a state-of-the-art videoboard was installed.

The project is part of the university's 10-year facilities master plan.

The Board of Regents will meet April 24-25 in Ames, Iowa.
