In partnership with BID Invest, the Community Health Workers Program arrives in Guatemala

Following its arrival in Guatemala in 2022 and having impacted the lives of over 1,500 women with its programs, Pro Mujer will strengthen its work in the country with the support of IDB Lab, the innovation and venture arm of the Inter-American Development Bank Group.

With an investment of $250,000 to promote Pro Mujer's work towards gender equity, both organizations aim to empower the country's women micro-entrepreneurs by bringing them closer to programs that cover the three pillars central to Pro Mujer: easy access and low-interest loans, health promotion and prevention, and digital skills for women's economic independence.

Initially, efforts will focus on health issues. The initial steps include:

  • Training and activating a network of health promoterswho will work in the field to strengthen preventive health capacities at the community level. The role of these promoters will be to raise awareness among women about the risks of diseases that affect them, guide them on how to detect them and help them seek treatment.
  • Activating a Chatbot, available in Spanish, that will provide relevant information on how to prevent and detect chronic diseases particularly affecting women's or family health.
  • Implementing a telemedicine pilot, through which remote care and consultations with health experts will be provided to generate diagnoses, offer basic information, resolve patients' doubts, and, when appropriate, refer them to health centers for treatment.

This initiative expects to train 190 women as community health promoter leadersand, with their help and the support of the chatbot, raise awareness and educate around 4,000 more womenon issues such as breast cancer, sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and diabetes, among others.
