ASEAN DLP Social Media Challenge is Calling for Applicants!

Application Deadline: 24 May 2024

Overview

The ASEAN Foundation, with the support of Google.org, is currently implementing the ASEAN Digital Literacy Programme (ASEAN DLP), a programme that aims to promote greater media literacy in the ASEAN region to combat online disinformation and misinformation. Since its launch in 2022, the programme has reached a vast 190,000 individuals across ASEAN through capacity building, 3,000 people through direct outreach by the ASEAN Youth Advisory Group and 190,000 people through various social media campaigns. To provide more people in ASEAN with the opportunity to learn about misinformation and disinformation, the Foundation also developed an e-learning platform called www.digitalclassASEAN.org.

Another flagship activity of ASEAN DLP is the regional research on digital literacy to explore the digital divide, looking into the underprivileged ASEAN communities' digital engagement and response to disinformation. On 20 March 2024, the Foundation had successfully launched the research entitled "One Divide or Many Divides? Underprivileged ASEAN Communities' Meaningful Digital Literacy and Response to Disinformation." It argues that the digital divide manifests not only as the difference between adequate and inadequate digital infrastructure and devices but also as the difference in self-efficacy, skills, experiences, knowledge, and skills relevant to engagement with digital technology. Through this research, the Foundation wishes to significantly contribute to creating inclusive digital literacy programme activities, curricula, and policy recommendations, especially in combating threats to disinformation and fake news among underprivileged communities in the ten ASEAN countries.

As part of the ASEAN Foundation's ongoing efforts to share research findings and promote key elements to a wider audience, the Foundation plans to implement of the ASEAN DLP Social Media Challenge. This initiative aims to engage youth from the ten ASEAN countries in creating innovative and engaging content on social media platforms. Through this challenge, the Foundation seeks to amplify the reach of the One Divide or Many Divides research report and foster greater awareness and understanding among the region's youth about important issues facing ASEAN.

Objectives, Target, and Format

We invite ASEAN youth to join the ASEAN DLP Social Media Challenge to help disseminate the findings from the "One Divide or Many Divides?
