Columbia Resident Celebrates Appliance Recycling Milestone With Dominion Energy

• Company picks up 25,000th customer appliance for recycling
• More than 2.5 million pounds of material recycled since 2014

CAYCE, S.C. (March 30, 2023) - When Columbia resident Mittie Blyther and her husband William decided to recycle their old refrigerator, they did not know theirs would be Dominion Energy South Carolina's 25,000th appliance pickup.

The company celebrated the milestone with an event at the Blyther family's home earlier this week. Along with the refrigerator pickup, Dominion Energy representatives gifted the Blythers with a $200 voucher to be used at EnergyWiseShop.com, the company's online lighting store featuring Energy Star-qualified products, such as LED light bulbs, advanced power strips and smart thermostats. Mittie Blyther sees the program as a great opportunity to improve energy efficiency in her home while responsibly and conveniently discarding an old appliance.

"I purchased a new refrigerator, but my old one was still working, and I didn't want to just get rid of it," she said. "For the consumer, it's a win-win all around. I'm getting a $50 check to recycle a refrigerator I was getting rid of anyway."

Since 2014, Dominion Energy has recycled thousands of customer-owned refrigerators and freezers in South Carolina, diverting more than 2.5 million pounds of metal, plastic and glass from local landfills. Eligible customers receive a $50 cash-back rebate after free pickup of the appliance and could save up to $110 annually on their electric bill. Customers receive a rebate within four to six weeks with no need to submit an application.

"This program continues to be a big win for our customers and the environment," said Josh McMillin, appliance recycling program manager for Dominion Energy South Carolina. "Our goal is to remove older, less energy efficient appliances from the grid to reduce energy usage in homes. We also ensure these appliances are recycled in an environmentally friendly way as possible, reinforcing Dominion Energy's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship."

Only full-size appliances in working condition are eligible for recycling. Customers may visit DominionEnergySC.com/RecycleSC for complete program eligibility and details. Customers can also call 877-510-7234 for assistance.

Additionally, the company is a partner with the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Responsible Appliance Disposal program, following best practices available that go beyond what federal law requires when recycling and disposing of appliances.

The more than 2.5 million pounds of waste recycled from 25,000 refrigerators and freezers includes:

  • 2,575,000 pounds of metal,
  • 325,000 pounds of plastic, and
  • 75,000 pounds of glass.
