HRC55 - Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Myanmar - EU Statement

United Nations Human Rights Council

55th session

Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Myanmar

19 March

EU Statement

The EU thanks the Special Rapporteur and welcomes his report.

Mr President,

The human rights situation in Myanmar continues its downward spiral. The responsibility for this lies with the Myanmar military and its repressive actions, some of which reportedly may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.

All parties to the conflict must respect human rights and international humanitarian law. We condemn all humanitarian access restrictions and encourage a more active role of the United Nations in providing the necessary assistance.

The EU is gravely concerned about the mandatory conscription announcement by the Myanmar military, which may result in increased instability in Myanmar and across the region.

Mr President,

The EU is a longstanding proponent of an arms embargo. Increased international preventive action is urgently needed. The EU calls on all parties to stop exporting or facilitating weapons for the Myanmar military, as well as 'dual-use' items when there are reasonable grounds to suspect that such goods, technologies or weapons might be used to violate or abuse human rights. Special Rapporteur,

How can international and regional organizations do better when it comes to Myanmar? How can accountability for the grave human rights violations and abuses committed be ensured?
