CATIE strengthens agricultural research capabilities in Guatemala

• Through a training process, the knowledge and capabilities of young professionals dedicated to agricultural research will be improved.

November 23, 2023. CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), through its Biostatistics Unit, is conducting a course on Statistics as part of the training process for professionals specialized in agricultural research. The course will be held from November 20 to December 2 at the facilities of the Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ICTA) in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.

This course marks the beginning of a broader program, the Program to Strengthen the Capacity of Guatemalan Agricultural Research Institutions to Support Rural Agricultural Development (CRIA), funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and implemented by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

The main objective of this first course is to strengthen the knowledge and skills of CRIA program staff in the field of agricultural research. It focuses on improving the skills of professionals in advanced statistical modeling and multivariate analysis of experiments, using the statistical software InfoStat as an analysis tool.

"This is an important step in strengthening agricultural research capacities in the country, contributing to sustainable rural agricultural development," said Julio Lopez, CATIE representative in Guatemala.

The course has the participation of 34 young professionals, including women and men, who work for ICTA in the departments of Quetzaltenango, San Marcos, Chimaltenango and Huehuetenango, playing key roles in agricultural research in Guatemala.

This training initiative is promoted by CATIE's National Office in Guatemala and delivered by Fernando Casanoves and Eduardo Corrales, both experts from the Center's Biostatistics Unit.
