Get to know a little more about this month's Volunteer Spotlight: Patrice Murphy!
Career Information (Past, Present or Future)
I worked in community mental health for 30 years with adults who experience severe mental illness.
Gardening, reading. I monitor bluebird nests for the Bella Vista Bluebird Society and I am currently taking an online nature journaling class which has been fun - the illustration part is challenging.
Favorite artwork or space at the museum
Well, right now at this very moment I would say it is Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room-My Heart is Dancing into the Universe. You walk in there and you think, wow, where am I? I also admire her openness regarding her mental health and her strength in pursuing her passions. I would also say anywhere on the grounds at the museum and you come to know this is a very special place.
What prompted you to get involved with the museum?
I was looking for opportunities to get involved when I moved here and Crystal Bridges was the perfect fit for me.
In what ways have you been involved as a volunteer with the museum thus far?
The Avant Gardener volunteer program is my go-to activity. I also helped with the Sages and Scientist conference.
What keeps you coming back to volunteer?
An opportunity to give back and to be in such a wonderful environment. The staff here are so welcoming and gracious. I also appreciate the flexibility of the volunteer program.
What do you enjoy most about your volunteer experience?
Meeting new people, learning about native plants.
What have you learned from, or how have you been personally affected by, your experience with the museum?
It has changed how I garden and it has allowed me to get back to my roots! No pun intended.
Do you have a funny or inspirational story you can briefly tell about your volunteer experience? Please share with us!
It's so fun to see families coming here and taking in the experience. The fact that it is free allows for so many more to have that opportunity to explore and to learn.
Is there anything else that you would like to share?
I feel so fortunate to be part of a truly exceptional place like Crystal Bridges.
Do you have any advice for individuals considering volunteering with Crystal Bridges?
There is something for everyone here which makes it even more special. Please join us!
