City Seeks Additional Support to Aid Peartree Land Movement

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, CA - At its July 11th City Council meeting, the Rolling Hills Estates City Council voted unanimously to proclaim a state of local emergency due to significant land movement in the Peartree Lane residential area, which requires immediate and ongoing action from the City, first responders, and utility companies. The emergency proclamation enables the City to request state and federal assistance for its ongoing response.

"As City officials and neighbors, we offer our support and sympathies for our Peartree Lane residents who have been displaced from their homes by the land movement. This proclamation is an important step to ensuring our City can access additional resources to support a full response to the situation our neighbors are facing." declared Rolling Hills Estates Mayor Britt Huff. "In the face of this disaster, I have seen our community members rally to support their neighbors - reflecting the best of our tight knit community. Our City team has rallied to track this situation, support those affected and leverage our LA County resources. My thanks to all who have supported this effort."

To date, a total of 17 residential units in the vicinity of Peartree Lane have been asked to evacuate due to unsafe conditions or lost utility services caused by the land movement. This afternoon, five residential units were asked to evacuate when the sewer service to their homes was severed by a broken sewer line.

Peartree Lane is a private road tucked inside a gated community with two shared homeowners associations. The City has been in contact to support affected residents while seeking to collaborate with the homeowners associations to investigate and address the land movement. The cause of the movement remains unknown and under investigation.

Since opening its Emergency Operations Center on July 8, the City has collaborated with Los Angeles County agencies and the Red Cross for sheltering and support to ensure every resource is available to affected residents. The emergency remains active and will require the City's ongoing support in coordination with fire and law enforcement departments, utility companies, and other resources as required.
