KEY VOTE ALERT: Ohio Republicans Will Be Forced To Explain GOP Opposition To $1400 Relief Checks, Urgently Needed American Rescue Plan

DSCC Executive Director Christie Roberts issued the following statement on Senator Rob Portman's vote against the American Rescue Plan and the Ohio Senate race:

'Josh Mandel, Jane Timken and every other Republican candidate who runs to replace Senator Portman in 2022 will be forced to explain why they would side with Mitch McConnell and the politicians in Washington who repeatedly delayed and voted to block this urgently needed relief package, and against the Ohio families and communities struggling in this pandemic.'

Portman's vote against the American Rescue Plan comes as nearly 17,000 Ohioans have died, nearly one million have been infected, and thousands more are jobless, have seen their small businesses close, or had their lives upended during this crisis.

Senator Portman voted today against a relief package that will:

• Deliver $1,400 direct relief checks
• Ramp up access to vaccines and testing
• Provide additional local funding to help schools safely reopen
• Send aid to state and local governments to help keep first responders on the job
• Extend emergency unemployment insurance
• Boost critical small business assistance
• Cut child poverty nearly in half

While Republicans voted no, the American people support this plan:

• 77% of Americans - including a clear majority of Republican voters
• Local GOP elected officialsacross the country
• 17 Ohio mayors representing Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Canton, Dayton, Findlay, Elyria, Euclid, Kettering, Massillon, Lima, Lorain, Marion, Parma, Toledo and Warrensville Heights
