Matthew Major (Of Counsel-Florham Park, NJ) will begin a four-year term on the District XA Ethics Committee for East Morris and Sussex Counties, one of 18 district ethics committees and 17 district fee arbitration committees throughout the state assisted and managed by the Office of Attorney Ethics (OAE). The OAE acts as the investigative and prosecutorial arm of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in discharging the Court's constitutional responsibility to supervise and discipline New Jersey attorneys. The district ethics committees, all volunteers, are called on to perform a number of duties. They participate in regular monthly committee meetings, and attorney members investigate grievances docketed by the committee. If their initial investigation finds grounds for a formal complaint, the matter is heard by a panel of committee members comprising two attorneys and one public member. The OAE handles serious, emergent and complex disciplinary prosecutions, and administers the Random Audit Compliance Program, which monitors the recordkeeping responsibilities of private practice law firms.
