SWOSU’s 7th Annual World Languages Week planned for April 9–11

The World Languages program at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) is presenting the 7th annual World Languages Week on April 9-11 on the SWOSU campus. The SWOSU community is invited to join and participate in this event that celebrates the diversity of languages and cultures present at the university.

World Languages Week has become a significant tradition at SWOSU, with a goal of increasing awareness of language learning and cultural diversity. Throughout this event, SWOSU students have the opportunity to learn about the language courses offered at the university. In an increasingly multilingual world, the goal is to equip SWOSU students with proficiency in different languages. The advantages of learning a foreign language are indisputable. Exposure to foreign languages can open the doors to different cultures, personal and community growth, and professional and economic development opportunities.

The World Languages program offers a World Languages minor, which can be completed entirely online. Recently, the minor has seen a substantial increase in enrollment, with over 80 students currently enrolled. This minor offers opportunities to learn two or more languages, with only five courses required.

The week will begin with the Language Honor Society Initiation on Tuesday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m. in Stafford room 125. During this ceremony, Gema Chamoso Rodriguez from Spain will be inducted as a lifetime member of the Alpha Mu Gamma National Foreign Language Honor Society. She will also be presented with an honor certificate for her studies and academic achievements in Spanish and Italian language courses, along with an honor cord to be worn during her graduation ceremony.

On Wednesday, April 10 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. a World Languages table will be set up in the Memorial Student Center. T-shirts featuring the unique World Languages logo will be available for purchase. Attendees will have the opportunity to enroll in the World Languages program and join the World Languages and Cultures Association. Free gifts, including tumblers, string bags, and sling bags with the World Languages @ SWOSU logo, will be available for students who sign up for the contact list.

Later that evening at 5:30 p.m. in Stafford room 125, attendees can participate in Venetian mask decorating, with free pizza available. This activity draws inspiration from two well-known festivals held in Venice, Italy and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, both celebrated in February, where masks are traditionally worn. Students can decorate their masks based on their preferences. The World Languages Week flyer features the Venetian mask, one of the most iconic masks globally.

To end the week, the club will host a free movie screening of "Mamma Mia" on Thursday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m.
