Carla Suarez Navarro will begin Spain's Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II play-off tie against Italy in Chieti with a clash against Jasmine Paolini on Saturday.
The world No. 29, ranked 129 spots above the Italian, will hope to give Spain the early advantage in the tie before Sara Errani faces Lara Arruabarrena in the second rubber.
Sunday will see the reverse singles before the doubles takes place if a fifth rubber is required, with three Fed Cup rookies currently scheduled to take part - Italians Deborah Chiesa and Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and Spain's Georgia Garcia-Perez, who could play alongside Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
Spain is hoping to return to the World Group II play-offs in April and avoid a third straight defeat in the competition, having lost to Czech Republic and France in its last two ties.
Their clash against Italy is their sixth away from home in their last seven ties, but their first under new captain Anabel Medina Garrigues.
The Italians, meanwhile, are hoping to avoid contesting the World Group II play-offs for the second straight year - and only the second time since 1997.
