At approximately 0325 hours Tuesday morning the Spokane Fire Department, and neighboring automatic aid partner Fire District Nine, responded to the 9500 N block of Loganberry Court. Spokane Engine 17 from the neighborhood fire station in the Indian Trail District arrived on scene four minutes after dispatch. Engine 17 reported moderate smoke coming from a 2-story split level home with an attached garage. On arrival a wheelchair bound elderly female was exiting on a motorized scooter and was unharmed. The resident was awoken to the sound of a burst water pipe, the smoke detectors failed to alert. Engine 17 immediately initiated fire attack on the second floor interior fire. Spokane Quint 13 arrived on scene and gained entry into the structure to check for fire extension and conduct a search of the interior to ensure no one was inside. Tower 91 made access to the roof to assist with ventilation. The fire was concentrated to the second floor and attic space of the master bedroom and bathroom. The fire was contained to a room and contents fire and was extinguished within 10 minutes of the first fire crews arriving on scene. 6 fire apparatus along with 19 firefighters responded to fight the fire. No injuries to civilians or firefighters reported. The cause of the fire is under investigations by the Spokane Fire Special Investigation Unit.

Working smoke alarms save lives, cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half (NFPA). Smoke alarms should be installed in every room used for sleeping, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test your smoke alarm once a month. Make sure everyone in your home understands the sound the smoke alarm makes, and knows what to do when activated.
