Cadeler signed up for East Anglia THREE turbine install

ScottishPower has signed a firm contract with Cadeler for the transportation and installation of the 95 wind turbines that will produce up to 1.4GW of green electricity at its East Anglia THREE offshore windfarm.

The contract signing comes after the renewables developer formalised its biggest ever contract award with Siemens Gamesa for the turbines, which will produce enough clean energy to power more than 1.3 million homes.

To support the East Anglia THREE project, Cadeler will deploy one of its O-class vessels featuring the new crane as well as one of the two newbuild X-class vessels - currently under construction.

Ross Ovens, ScottishPower Renewables' Managing Director for the East Anglia Hub, said: "We're pleased to have signed this contract with Cadeler as part of our ongoing efforts to secure all major supply chain contracts for our East Anglia THREE offshore windfarm.

"East Anglia THREE will play a critical role in bringing more homegrown green electricity on to the grid, with a capacity of 1,400MW of green electricity it will help achieve the clean energy future we all want - and need. This contract highlights the opportunities that offshore wind offers and how it can support innovation and growth across the supply chain and economy as showcased by Cadeler."

Mikkel Gleerup, CEO at Cadeler, said: "We are pleased to sign this important contract and begin our new partnership with ScottishPower Renewables. East Anglia THREE is a highly ambitious project that when finished will power 1.3 million homes with renewable energy and have a definite impact on our urgent transition to green energy sources. For this project Cadeler will use both our O-class and X-class vessel, and it will be great to see the true potential of our newbuild X-class vessels come to good use."

With a deck space of 5,600m2, a payload of over 17,600 tons and main crane capacity of above 2,000 tons at 53 meters, the new X-class vessels have the ability to transport and install significant capacities - for example, five sets of 20+ MW turbines or seven complete 15MW turbine sets per load, cutting down the number of trips needed for individual projects, accelerating installation speed and minimising the carbon footprint.

East Anglia THREE will be constructed in the southern North Sea, 69km offshore from Great Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast and is part of the East Anglia zone.

The project will support over 2,300 jobs during the two-year construction period and over 100 roles in operation and maintenance over the lifetime of the windfarm.

ScottishPower has already placed contracts worth nearly £70 million with UK companies for EA THREE and it is estimated that the company will invest over £2 billion within the UK to support the construction and operation of the windfarm throughout its lifetime.
