THE Penang Covid-19 Fund received a RM1 million boost today following a recent appeal by the Penang government for assistance to help equip the state Health Department in the fight against the coronavirus.

Dufu Technology Corp Bhd has stepped forward to donate RM500,000 while its Group executive chairman, Lee Hui Ta, who is also known as Li Hui Ta, also donated RM500,000 in his own capacity to the fund.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow received a mock cheque from Lee himself and another mock cheque from Dufu Technology Group chief executive officer Yeoh Beng Hooi in Komtar today. Also present at the cheque handover ceremony was Dufu Group chief financial officer David Khoo Chong Beng.

"In response to the state government's appeal for assistance to the state Health Department, either through contributions in kind or cash, we have received some response so that Covid-19 patients admitted to the hospital and other facilities can receive adequate healthcare.

"On behalf of the Penang state government, I would like to record my deepest appreciation to Dufu Technology and Mr Lee for their kind contribution.

"This money will be channelled to the state Health Department by equipping them to increase their capacity as required.

"Since Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 March, we're very indeed thankful to the many corporate citizens in Penang, NGOs, private sector organisations and community-based organisations for responding and collaborating with the state government and the state Health Department as we face this challenge together," Chow said in his speech at the ceremony.

He added that through the collaborative effort, assistance has been granted to those who have been impacted by Covid-19 through the various initiatives.

Chow said the latest initiative was turning the Caring Society Complex to a Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre which required some facility to be put in place.

"I'm happy to announce that the centre is now open and has already received several patients two days ago.

"Once again, thank you very much for this kind contribution and I hope your good deed will also encourage other corporate citizens to make this contribution to the Penang Covid-19 Fund," Chow added.

"We're responding to the call for assistance by the chief minister last week. As you know, the number of Covid-19 cases in Penang recently is very high. Actually, if you look at the medical supply and healthcare system, it is very important to be equipped to be effective in the fight against Covid-19.
