Brown Urges Social Security Commissioner to Reopen Warrensville Heights Office as Soon as Possible

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ahead of the 90-day closure of the Warrensville Heights Social Security Office, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) urged Social Security Commissioner O'Malley to reopen the office as soon as possible. In the letter, Brown called on Commissioner O'Malley to work with community members to alert those impacted about the closure and to ensure that Ohioans continue to have access to the services they count on, especially those without reliable internet access or who require in-person appointments. Brown also committed to working with his colleagues to ensure the Social Security Administration has the resources it needs to prevent future office closures.

"I urge you to take all necessary steps to ensure Ohioans continue to have access to the services they count on and to take all necessary steps to reopen the Warrensville Heights office as soon as possible," wrote Brown.

The letter is available here and below.

Dear Commissioner O'Malley:

I write regarding your announcement that you plan to close the Cleveland Southeast Social Security field office in Warrensville Heights for 90 days. I urge you to take all necessary steps to ensure Ohioans continue to have access to the services they count on and to take all necessary steps to reopen the Warrensville Heights office as soon as possible.

Social Security is our government's promise to working men and women and is the bedrock of our middle class. This includes those who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which the Social Security Administration (SSA) also administers. More than one-in-six Ohioans receive Social Security benefits, and many depend on Social Security for nearly all their income. Given Social Security's importance, it is crucial that beneficiaries and their families have access to the services that physical Social Security field offices provide.

In the weeks ahead, I ask that you do all you can to ensure Clevelanders and others who count on the Warrensville Heights field office for SSA services are aware of the closure and can continue to access those services uninterrupted during those months. As you review your agency's presence in Cleveland to develop a more long-term strategy, I ask that you work directly with community members to ensure all beneficiaries in Cuyahoga County and beyond have access to in-person SSA services and can count on receiving their benefits in full and on-time. I urge you to reopen the Warrensville Heights location as soon as possible.

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your prompt response.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown
