Visit of the Minister of the Interior Lamorgese to Washington

The Italian Minister of the Interior Luciana Lamorgese visited the United States of America on June 16, 2022.

In the early afternoon, the Minister held meetings with U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, as well as U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. Topics of discussion included combating organized crime and terrorism, countering cybercrime and international drug trafficking, and managing migration flows, also in light of the changed international geopolitical scenario following Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

"These were very useful meetings that highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between Italy and the U.S., as well as our shared purposes," the Minister said at a press conference at the Italian Embassy. "We discussed cooperation in the area of organized crime and collaboration within the anti-mafia operational network developed with Europol, which regards the FBI as a key partner in countering criminal and mafia-style organizations, yielding results such as 'Mafia connection' and the 2020 'New Mafia connection'."

Other topics addressed, according to the Ministry of the Interior, focused on information exchange with Italian police forces, including web monitoring of foreign fighters and other national security threats, and strengthening info-investigative synergies to identify routes used by drug traffickers.
