Congressman Cleaver’s Statement on Motion to Vacate the Speakership

(Kansas City, MO) - Today, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO) released the following statement on yesterday's vote in the House of Representatives to vacate the speakership.

"Yesterday, I had an outpatient procedure related to a recent knee replacement, which caused me to miss last night's vote on the motion to vacate the speakership.

"Had I voted, I would have joined the vast majority of America's representatives in rejecting this latest attempt by far-right lawmakers to sow chaos and plunge the nation's government into turmoil by removing the speaker.

"I look forward to returning to the nation's capital to continue my work on behalf of Missourians in the Fifth Congressional District."
