Some of the key local contractor companies involved in the upgrade were, from left, YMCA, Impact Built, WinPatrol, Veolia and Steve White Builders, as well as lead contractor Hydrilla.

The highly anticipated upgrade to the Whyalla Recreation Centre is now complete, with the community welcome back to enjoy the upgraded facilities!

The Recreation Centre's community day is scheduled for this Saturday May 11 and the public is invited to join in the celebration. Community members can look forward to enjoying the leisure and 25-metre pools, new water feature toys, as well as the upgraded spa and sauna.

Mayor Phill Stone also said it was exciting to be able to reopen the entire facility to residents now the works have been completed.

''The community has made it clear how important this facility is to them, so we trust they'll enjoy this extensive upgrade," Mayor Stone.

''We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone involved in the project - which resulted in a significant amount of work for local contractors and ongoing injection into the economy - as well as the community for their patience during the closure period.

"These current works will not only improve the facility for years to come, but also pave the way for larger upgrades in the future, which will always involve external funding."

Whyalla City Council would like to extend a huge thank you to all contractors involved: Hydrilla, Steve White, See us Maintenance, WinPatrol, Aztec Glass, Impact Built, ALEP Electrical, Veolia, MC Labour Hire and Whyalla Bin Skip.

Site Manager for Hydrilla - the lead contractor on the project - Mick Coulthard, said it was a proud moment to see the project completed and the facility reopened to the community.

"We've been committed to ensuring the highest quality of work, and that the upgrades were completed in a timely manner with a focus on safety and longevity," Mr Coulthard said.

"We also made every effort to prioritise local contractors, content and spend wherever possible - including sub-contracting local electricians, builders and labour hire and utilising local businesses such as retail, accommodation and equipment hire - to maximise the benefit for the Whyalla economy."

During the works, the Recreation Centre offered a range of activities to keep the community connected and involved in their project. Their events received positive feedback from the community for providing fun and engaging activities during school holidays and weekends. Community groups were considered during this time, with the Whyalla Stingers Swim Club and the Aqua Aerobics group paying a visit to the Port Augusta Swim Centre.

Whyalla Recreation Centre Manager, James Adair expressed his gratitude for everyone who played a role in the upgrade. "We couldn't be happier with the results" Mr Adair said.

''It was great to see the community enjoy a range of different activities; we hope to have some of these become regular activities for the centre moving forward.''
