Ku-ring-gai Council launches initiatives to preserve heritage homes

Published on 03 April 2024

Ku-ring-gai Council has announced two initiatives which support local homeowners in preserving and restoring the magic of their heritage homes: the Heritage Home Grants and the Heritage Colours in Ku-ring-gai guideline.

"Ku-ring-gai has a proud history of heritage homes, and these initiatives demonstrate our dedication in ensuring that our architectural heritage is cherished and protected," said Mayor Sam Ngai.

"The Heritage Home Grants and Heritage Colours guidelines will empower our community to continue the tradition of caring for our historic homes and preserving their beauty and significance for future generations.

"Our grants help owners carry out essential repairs and conserve historic features. If you've been thinking about doing those repairs now is the time to apply for a grant," he said.

Heritage Home Grants

Heritage Home Grants are open for heritage property projects to be carried out in the 2024-2025 financial year.

Grants will be allocated on a dollar for dollar basis, with a minimum of $1000 and up to a maximum of $5000. Examples of projects that could qualify for funding include:

  • Repair or replacement of original roof slates or tiles.
  • Repointing of brickwork or masonry.
  • Repairing decorative ceilings or pressed metal work.
  • Conservation of original fireplaces.
  • Conserving or repairing original timber detailing.
  • Painting of exteriors in heritage colour scheme.

Heritage Home Grants are open until Monday 13 May.

Heritage Colours in Ku-ring-gai

To enhance the authenticity and distinctiveness of heritage homes, Council has produced a free illustrated guide to help owners select traditional paint colours.

The guideline contains researched external colour schemes for the main architectural styles found in Ku-ring-gai. This provides 48 illustrated colour charts for Federation, Inter-war, Post-war and Late Twentieth architecture.

The guide can be used to apply for a Heritage Home Grant for external painting in a traditional scheme.
