Crash at North Bismarck Expressway and East Main Avenue Leaves One Dead

Bismarck Police Department Traffic Officers are investigating a crash involving the death of Marvin Helland (84), of Anamoose, after he was involved in a head-on crash at the intersection of North Bismarck Expressway and East Main Avenue around 5:29 P.M. on March 28.

Marvin was eastbound on East Main Avenue and was crossing North Bismarck Expressway when his passenger car struck a single unit box truck driven by Mark Praus (63) of Mandan, who was westbound on East Main Avenue, making a left turn to head south on Bismarck Expressway.

Marvin was extricated from his vehicle by Bismarck Fire and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Mark did not report any injuries and is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Barricades were placed by public works to allow the officers to process the crash scene. The barricades were in place for approximately three hours. The Bismarck Police would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while the intersection was closed.

No charges have been filed at this time, as there needs to be a thorough investigation conducted by the Bismarck Police Traffic Unit. They continue to follow-up on the evidence and will send the report to the Burleigh County State's Attorney Office for review.
