Singapore Student Athletes Gear Up for ASEAN Schools Games 2024 in Vietnam

More than 100 student athletes from 24 schools will be representing Singapore at the 13th ASEAN School Games (ASG) in Da Nang, Vietnam from 31 May to 9 June 2024. The Singapore School Sports Team (SSST) contingent will compete in four sports, namely Athletics, Badminton, Basketball and Swimming.

2.Themed "Connect to Shine Bright", over 1,000 student athletes from 10 ASEAN nations will participate in the ASG for the first time since the Games was last held in 2019. Organised by the ASEAN Schools Sports Council¹, ASG aims to promote ASEAN solidarity among youth, while providing opportunities for student athletes to benchmark and hone their sporting talents. Singapore student athletes will have the opportunity to connect with and learn from their ASEAN peers through friendly competition and their shared passion for sports.

3.Second Minister for Education, Dr Maliki Osman, was the Guest-of-Honour at the ASG send-off ceremony held at St. Joseph's Institution on 21 May 2024. The SSST contingent will be led by Chef de Mission and Principal of Kranji Secondary School, Mr Chua Lek Hong. He will be assisted by Deputy Chef de Mission and Principal of Clementi Town Secondary School, Mdm Rasidah Bte Rahim and 35 other officials from the Ministry of Education and schools.

4.Mr Chua said: "Our athletes' journey to this moment has been one of dedication, perseverance, and sacrifice. Each rigorous training session, every setback overcome, and every triumph celebrated has led them to this stage. As they gear up to represent Singapore on the international stage, I urge them to embrace the values of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and excellence."

5.The student athletes in the SSST were selected based on their overall performance at the National School Games, and other local and regional sports competitions. They must be 18 years old or younger on 1 January of the year of the Games, and be full-time students in their respective ASEAN countries.
