Crews make significant progress overnight in restoring power

Inspections and repairs ongoing as storm impacts continue

HONOLULU, Jan. 31, 2025 - Hawaiian Electric worked throughout the night, reducing the number of outages to about 10,800 on Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui County as of 9 a.m., down from 39,500 at 8 p.m. last night. Although severe weather continues to impact Hawaii Island, restoration efforts are progressing. Crews also are working to restore power in pockets across Oahu and Maui County.

"We appreciate the public's continued patience as our employees work as quickly and safely as possible to restore all of our customers," said Jim Alberts, Hawaiian Electric senior vice president and chief operations officer.

As of 9 a.m.,

  • Oahu: Crews restored more than 20,000 customers overnight. Work continues today to restore about 4,800 customers remaining without power in pockets across Oahu.
  • Maui County: Despite challenging weather conditions overnight, crews restored more than half of the 6,500 customers who were without power. Crews are working to restore about 2,200 customers in pockets of Upcountry, including Kula, Pukalani, Olinda, as well as Haiku and Kihei. The majority in parts of Upcountry and North Shore areas on Maui were out due to fallen trees and branches on lines.
  • Hawaii Island: While crews restored more than 4,000 customers overnight, severe weather continues to impact Hawaii Island. About 3,800 are without power, mostly in the upper and lower Puna areas on the eastern side of the island.

While the number of outages has significantly reduced, about 200 Hawaiian Electric crews and contractors continue inspections and repairs to address the remaining outages, many caused by downed trees and weather-related debris blown into power lines.

Because of the dynamic nature of the storm system, outage numbers represent a snapshot in time and are subject to change as additional customers are restored and more outages occur, sometimes in the same area. Our priorities for restoration emphasize safety and essential community services. Restoration also will take place in a manner designed to affect the greatest number of customers first.
