City Council Preview

City Councilwill meet on Monday, July15,at 7 p.m. Here are a few noteworthy items from the agenda:

  • Discussion regardingemergency warning sirens and transition to automated activation.
  • Consideration of an additionalBusiness Assistance Program (BAP) GROWTH Grant request forBrunch City Café.
  • Approving the acceleration of the water meter replacement programto replace metersat the end of their useful life,reduce unaccounted for water, and increase revenue through accuratereadings.
  • An ordinancethat reflectsthat the Citywill cover the cost of replacing the customer portionof lead/galvanized service lines. The ordinance defines the eligible costs that the City will pay for and the ineligible costs that the City will not pay for.

Union Pacific Railroad Track Repairs July 8-18

The Union Pacific Railroad is doing repairs to the train crossing on Pearson St. between Ellinwood and Miner St. (U.S. Route 14). This requires a full closure andis expected to be completed by July 18, weather permitting. A posted detour directs motorists to Graceland Ave. for southbound traffic and Lee St. for northbound traffic.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs in the work zones, obey posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for 2023

The City of Des Plaines Finance Department has reconciled the 2023 financial information which has been audited by and independent audit firm and the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for 2023 (annual audit) is now available at desplaines.org/budget.

Speak Des Plaines'Community Strengths and Needs Survey

We're partnering with Speak Des Plaines on a survey about life in Des Plaines! This survey is part of a Des Plaines community strengths and needs assessment.

Please share this link with your neighbors and friends so a wide variety of residents can participate. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Your participation is voluntary and anonymous.

Shred Event

Our friends at Village Bank and Trust are hosting a free shred event. This is a great opportunity to securely dispose of your personal and confidential papers, helping to protect your identity and the environment.

The event will take place from 9-11 a.m. at Village Bank and Trust, 1545 Ellinwood, and is open to all community members. Get more information on the City'swebsite.

National Night Out

Looking for some fun and educational family activities? Come to National Night Out! Our public safety teams will be in Metropolitan Square on August 6 from 5-8 p.m.

They'll have vehicles and equipment from Des Plaines Police and Fire, demonstrations from our specialty units, and an opportunity to meet the officers who keep our community safe.

Food Truck Round Up

Join the City of Des Plaines on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 5-8 p.m., on Library Plaza for another Food Truck Round Up event. We encourage attendees to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy the live music from Justine Ewaldat 5:30 p.m. Everyone in the community is invited to attend!

Menu items include smash burgers, grilled cheese, lobster rolls, potsticker bowl, Kalua pork sliders, quesadillas, tacos, nachos, funnel cakes, ice cream, and more!
