What is Walktober?

Walktober offers fun events to help promote walking as a free, healthy and environmentally friendly option in the City of Raleigh.

Walktober is sponsored in partnership with Commute Smart Raleigh. Commute Smart consultants offer solutions to alleviate traffic congestion by encouraging the increased use of transportation options such as walking, biking, transit, carpooling, and parking cash-out.

Walk to School Day

Commute Smart Raleigh WALKinar

Join the City's Commute Smart Raleighprogram to hear local experts speak about walk infrastructure plans and policies. Come learn about the health benefits of walking from a local expert.

South Raleigh Heritage Stroll

Saturday, October 15
10 a. m. to 11:30 p.m.
and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The tours highlight the rich history of South Raleigh and focus on many aspects of African American heritage in the region. The tours will include stops at several City of Raleigh Historic Sites (e.g. the Top Greene Community Center, the Pope House Museum, Moore Square) as well as other extant and no longer extant historic resources (e.g. Shaw University properties, the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge, Lightner Arcade, Lincoln Theater).

Both tours will start and end at the Top Greene Community Center. No sign up required. Call 919-996-2220 for more information.

Chocolates and Trains - A Walking Tour

Saturday, October 22
10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join Commute Smart Raleigh Saturday, October 22 at 10:30 a.m. for delicious beverages from Black and White Coffee (located inside Videri Chocolate Factory) and a tour of the Raleigh Union train station. All registered guests will receive a voucher for one small free drink of their choice. After getting your beverage, please head down the street to join us at Raleigh Union Station for a free behind-the-scenes tour of Raleigh's only train station, Raleigh Union Station.

Learn more about the innovative architecture, plans for the station, and experience arguably the best indoor space in the city!
