Arbor Day Foundation Names League City a 2023 Tree City USA®

Recently, League City was named a 2023 Tree City USA® by the Arbor Day Foundation in recognition of the City's efforts to protect and plant trees in our community.

"Tree City USA communities see the positive effects of an urban forest firsthand," said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "The trees being planted and cared for by League City are ensuring that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life."

The Tree City program requires cities to have a tree board or department (League City has an arborist on staff), have a tree care ordinance, dedicate an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and host an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Other efforts by League City in 2023 included:

  • Tree Giveaway at Eco Fest: Handed out over 350 large trees to residents
  • Provided education to the public on tree selection, tree species, and tree planting at Eco Fest
  • Tree Seedling Giveaway for Texas Arbor Day: Handed out over 200 tree seedlings
  • Tree removal of dead and/or diseased trees in City parks and City property throughout the year
  • Removal of invasive species (like the Chinese Tallow) at the Dick Benoit Prairie Preserve several times a year
