On January 23, 2025, Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei, upon invitation, attended the reception for the Independence Day of Sri Lanka held by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in China, and met with Ambassador of Sri Lanka to China Majintha Joseph Priye Jayesinghe.
Hong Lei congratulated Sri Lanka on the 77th anniversary of its independence, saying that China and Sri Lanka are traditional friendly neighbors. Over the past 68 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral relations have always developed healthily and steadily. Last week, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake paid a successful state visit to China, and the two heads of state reached important common understandings, providing new strategic guidance for the development of China-Sri Lanka relations. China is ready to work with Sri Lanka to implement the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, deepen the China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership featuring sincere mutual assistance and ever-lasting friendship, and jointly build a China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future.
Majintha Joseph Priye Jayesinghe said that Sri Lanka and China enjoy traditional friendship and the friendship between the two countries has grown stronger over time. With the joint efforts of both sides, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake made a successful visit to China, and Sri Lanka-China relations have entered a new stage. Sri Lanka firmly pursues the one-China principle. Sri Lanka is willing to work with China to seize opportunities, consolidate the traditional friendship between Sri Lanka and China, deepen the Belt and Road cooperation and practical cooperation in various fields, and push for in-depth and solid progress in the building of a Sri Lanka-China community with a shared future.
